Existential press - what does this mean??

A Moment's thoughts from Peter R:

Computers  first promoted as time saving....

It is interesting to remember that the idea of computers was first promoted as time saving’ -- and Bill Gates predicted that “64-bit computing will become mainstream in the PC industry over the next two years”.

My experience is that the current trend to “make things easier” is applicable only to the codes being used and not to the actual ‘hand-to-keyboard’ actions of ordinary folks.

I used to publish my websites using the Windows program, “Front Page” which, I am assured, was “far too complicated”. On-line support needed for this program has been severely reduced so I must make a program change to the “simple” CMS -- Content Management system -- using Joomla.

Now instead of inserting material into each page I want to publish, I must also insert HTML code, previously done for me by the old program. It is slow learning but I have an excellent teacher -- a brother Paul in London with whom I talk for lengthy periods free of charge on Skype.

It would all be much easier if I was a ‘retired pensioner’ - whatever that is. Now 70, I have never been busier -- and am never “bored”.

I just hope my friends and VillagePRESS readers will keep checking out the site - which will change before long…..
