When we invested in "Cut and Steam Ltd" to eliminate weeds organically
we were protecting everyone's health and the environment

Because we are chemical sensitive, we know the dangers to everyone’s health resulting from roadside spraying by local bodies. We have fought for chemical-free roadside care for years. This year we have “put our money where our mouth is” and funded a company to develop a brilliant new idea that resolves the problems of weed invasion of roadsides without the use of chemicals at any stage. This is the way to resolving weed problems on both Council and privately owned properties.....

Council roads are either sealed or unsealed, each needs a different method of weed control. Weeds such as pampas not growing on the road edge are not considered to be part of the road maintenance program.

Unsealed roads: The safety problem caused by tall growth blocking visibility on inside corners, is resolved rotary slashing, an effective and environmentally sound method. As part of road surface maintenance a grader clears the growth on the edge of the road. Additional spraying is unnecessary and a waste of Ratepayers’ money.

Sealed roads: Invasive weeds such as Kikuyu need to be prevented from growing into, and breaking up, the tarseal. Three steps are needed to deal with this effectively:.

1] The above surface growth needs to be cut,

2] The vegetation removed from the surface; this otherwise becomes soil and new
seeds sprout in it on the road surface
. and

3] The roots need to be killed,

Currently, [step 1] is dealt with by a rotary slashing contractor -- or the problem of [step 2] is far greater -- [step 3] is by a spray contractor but [step 2] is ignored, speeding up the need for an early repeated service.

The new idea: A new “tractor with a difference” has been built (and patented) which deals with all three steps with just one ‘pass’ of the road edge. It cuts the weed growth [step 1] and shoots this clear of the tarseal [step 2], then kills the roots with superheated steam [step 3] . The interval between treatments is considerably longer than the current method.

This new method is chemical-free and so does not damage to people’s health or our environment.

Of course, while developed for Council roadside care, private work is being contracted.
Additional machines will be developed and franchises will be available.
