Community Tai Chi
8-9pm Wednesdays, Starts 9th March Donation to cover costs. Manly Methodist Church, 945 Whangaparaoa Road. Ph. 428-2517 (Jim or Lee)
What we are setting out to do?
The idea behind Community Tai Chi is explained in part by its name. I had been
thinking how easy it was for us to become so involved in our own lives and
families and forget to contribute to the wider community. With both my wife
and I being reasonably accomplished students of Tai Chi, and knowing what a
positive effect it had had on my life when I first took it up as a young man,
I thought this would be a good way to make my contribution.
My approach to Tai Chi is that it is a form of moving meditation and ideally
the practitioner should come to Tai Chi with the idea of becoming a more
capable and positive person in some way or other. Through Tai Chi we can learn
to relax and develop greater awareness of our bodies and minds. So the real
purpose of Tai Chi is improved awareness, not improved health as many
mistakenly assume (although improved health may be a natural consequence).
The classes will teach the loosening exercises, the Yang style short form,
and eventually the pushing hands, in a structured way which I learned from my
teacher. I hope people will enjoy the classes and do some practice at home as
well, and we will all improve our awareness of our bodies and minds.
Thanks, Jim
