A reader has sent in a view on the "Rights of same sex couples" which we run here. That this subject needs airing, we agree. Please feel free to give us your views. The author believes, on 'touchy' subjects like this one, thoughts should be measured on their own rights, without each writer being personally "measured" -- we agree. Your name can also be withheld, provided the Editor clearly knows who you are - in confidence of course. I do not know if there have been any discussions on the article appearing under National News regarding the lack of rights for same sex couples. I totally agree the situation needs rectification but cannot accept the suggestion that the definition of marriage should be altered. Already the words "gay" and "hero" have been denigrated for many people, a friend who was christened Gabrielle but always known as Gay has, now in her seventies, reverted to calling herself Gabrielle having become fed up with snide remarks. By definition, marriage is the union of a man and a woman for amongst other things, the procreation of children. Could not same sex persons in long-term relationships be satisfied by other terminology such as “Contract of Union” or some such classification, after all for some the word marriage is sacred. Maybe if consensus was reached a submission could be sent to our policy makers. Name withheld on request | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
