Tourist accommodation providers beware

I have just been conned but at no cost to me at this time. Luckily I had a number of doubts early in the piece. I will follow the attempted scam up with Tourism NZ (etc).

Accommodation providers need to be aware they may be tricked into accepting guests who have paid a scam Tourist agent and believe they have paid you in advance. From this a potentially difficult and complicated outcome must result when it comes to the time for the guests to pay you.

I received an email seeking accommodation for five adults plus a rental car for 12 days in December. This would have cost the guests in excess of NZ$7000.

When the booking was sought, it was stated that the client would pay 100% in advance to confirm the agreement.

The 'agent' was named "Anne Pambudi"  with inaccuracies of English vocabulary not dissimilar to many second language emails. A check on the web address appears to support the booking as genuine.  A series of emails followed including asking that the guest be contacted direct. The guest did not reply.

“Anne Pambudi” advised that she was a young woman who also ran an orphanage in Bali, which benefited from half the commission from each booking she arranged.

When our desktop computer crashed during yet another power cut, we had to use a laptop to send the message. It was then noticed that the email address was not recorded. Previously direct <Reply> had been used.  To get to the agent quickly, the website www.balibagus.com was opened and a message sent to their <CONTACT> address.

The reply stated noone of that name worked for them.

The desktop working again, the email address reads <Denpasar Moon Travel>. Not until this adress is uncovered through <properties> does the actual address itself --   denpasarmoontravel@yahoo.com --  reveal it to be a yahoo address available to anyone anonymously. It is also shown to have originated in Indonesia.

Attempts to make contact to clarify the situation received initial response; subsequently no reply has been received from the “agent”, nor from the supposed client, nor from the website agency itself.

Exactly what the intention was is a matter for speculation.  One clear benefit would be for the emails from the host to be ‘doctored’ and fed to real guests in order to have them pay in advance.  Meanwhile the hosts could confirm and receive those guests. It would not be until the end of the visit and time to settle payment that the fraud would be discovered.

The initial email – which did originate in Indonesia -- read…
Dear Sir/Madame,
We are running an authorized and the most trustworthy travel and guide agent at Denpasar Bali Island, Indonesia. I can recommend your rooms to our veggie clients from Japan, Mr. Colonel Takada Ebisawa. He gives me order and authority fully to arrange his organic vacation well-designed. He has a surprise planning to have vacation with his family (5 person) that's way she asked me to prepare the reservation, flight, passport & fiscal etc. He also want to pay 100% deposit in advance to any reservations I am looking for, not just 30-50% payment in advance. So there's no need to balance the remainder upon their arrival. I also explained them this would be non-refundable funds when they'll make any cancellation for doing 100% payment in advance.

Before I do some arrangement the reservation, I have some questions here. This is about International reservation, that the rooms will be use in December 2005. The arrival-departure date is 2nd until 14th (12 consecutive nights). Do you accept major credit card for the payment? Do I get the commission for this recommendation from you? If yes, I propose you higher 11% commission on the total amount of the stay as any b&bs/inns/hotels/ranch normally give lower commission to travel agents.

The group is all adults and there are no children. They are two couples and one single man (5 person), about 45-55 years old and they would like to book two suite rooms with large bed and one suite room with single bed. My client also allow you to do split rooms with nearest rooms if necessery. Please recalculate the total payment with your best price include tax & gratuity service also my 11% commission will be.

Best Regards,
Anne Pambudi

This matter will be brought to the attention of the Tourist Dept and all guest book operators through whom host addresses are unfortunately so readily “spamable”.
