Existential press - what does this mean??

Green Party Spokesperson Nándor Tánczos accepts waste Bill report delay.  He writes:

Kia ora
As you know, June 30 was to have been the day on which the Local Government and Environment Committee reported its findings and recommendations on the Waste Minimisation Bill. However, the LGE-SC has decided to postpone the report back of the bill until 31 October 2007.

I do not believe that this is intended as a stalling tactic. The Select Committee had a very good public submission process. It heard a number of substantive and high quality submissions (and thanks if one of those was from you). The process resulted in many new insights into what is a very complex bill and the Committee has been working in an unusually cooperative and open manner across party boundaries. We all agree that a number of amendments are needed to ensure that the Bill does what it is intended to do, without unintended consequences.

I have always said that I am open to amendments to the bill. Discussions are happening, both in the Select Committee and with other parties, about what is needed and so I am happy to allow report-back date to be postponed in order to allow time to work through the necessary amendments. This will include working closely and co-operatively with the Government.

There is considerable momentum within Parliament to pass this bill with its key principles intact, and I believe that this postponement will only strengthen the legislation and consolidate support across the political spectrum.

Thank you for your continued support of the bill. Whether you were involved in Earth Day activities focusing on waste minimisation, have written to or met with your MP, or perhaps made a submission to the Committee, you've been part of the process that has taken us this far and your involvement has been important. But there is still a way to go! We have to keep the pressure on to make sure that the political commitment remains. It is especially important to keep talking those parties not represented on the Select Committee – Maori Party, UF, NZF (don’t worry about ACT, they are a lost cause on this one). We also need to keep working on the National Party leadership to try and get Caucus support for the Bill when it comes back from Select Committee.

So make a note in your calendar: 31 October 2007, Halloween - Waste Minimisation Bill report back. We'll stay in touch to let you know what is happening, and how you can get involved.

In the meantime, you can check our waste campaign page at www.greens.org.nz/campaigns/waste for updates or, if you have queries, feel free to contact me directly at nandor.tanczos@parliament.govt.nz.
