Existential press - what does this mean??

Phil Twyford MP - July 29, 2009
Labour spokesperson on Auckland Issues

Tell Govt not to sell Auckland Assets

Do you want Auckland's community-owned assets sold off under the super city? " I Don't Think So" is probably what you are thinking, writes MP Phil Twyford.

"Not yours to sell" is the name of the song attached in this email. Written and recorded by Kiwi music legend Don McGlashan to support the "Not Yours To Sell" campaign, is a catchy, sly dig at those who would corporatise our democracy and sell off our assets. See update below to hear the song - hope you enjoy it!

If you agree with the sentiments, then visit www.notyourstosell.co.nz where you can read about my member's bill, sign up as a supporter of the campaign, and send an email to National's Auckland MPs asking them to vote for my bill.

I've spent the last three weeks in the select committee hearing submissions from Aucklanders. It was inspirational hearing hundreds of Aucklanders come and speak so passionately about defending our democracy. One-third of all submitters asked that Auckland's assets remain in public hands, even though this issue is not included in this particular Bill, and technically the committee wasn't even going to hear representations on it. That is how strongly people feel! In one opinion survey on the North Shore 86% of people were opposed to any sale of Auckland's strategic assets.

UPDATE Aug 12,2009

Thanks so much for your continued interest in our urgent campaign to keep our publicly owned assets in public hands. I just wanted to let you know that my member’s bill to save Auckland’s publicly owned assets is due for its first reading in the House in a week's time. If you want to track its progress put a ring around August 19 on your calendar and tune in on the internet or television (more details to follow).

My Bill, which would require a referendum before any significant assets are sold by the Auckland super city, has been dismissed by some critics as unnecessary. What threat of privatization they say? Click

to read why my Bill is needed.

If you need any more convincing, have a look at this short video
<http://issues.co.nz/notyourstosell/videos>
in which I make the case for keeping Auckland for Aucklanders. We've
had a great response to the Don McGlashan’s anti-privatisation song

National's Auckland MPs telling them to support my Bill, there is
still time! If you have done all that, the next thing to do is to buy
one of the new Not Yours To Sell T-shirts

. A word of advice: Rodney Hide and his mates want to get their hands
on Auckland’s assets but don’t let them steal the shirt off your
back.

Cheers

Phil Twyford MP
