Federated Farmers Survey

Federated Farmers of New Zealand is currently reviewing its policy on GE and is asking for input into its policy.

Editor:  Note that the Survey uses the term "GM" which of course is totally misleading.... I wonder why.  Check the survey questions - with answers made by a NZ farmer. Add your views to the survey whether you are a farmer or the farmer's customer.....

The survey questions...   A NZ Farmer answers...
Do you think modern biotechnology, of which GM is part, is the right approach for all New Zealanders?

Not genetic engineering other than in a laboratory IF no escape was possible..
Do you think modern biotechnology, of which GM is part, is the right approach for rural New Zealand?

Absolutely not. Organic is the way to sell "Clean Green" NZ produce -- with a massive market bigger than we could supply in total.
Would your view change if products from GM primary sector production systems were widely acceptable to consumers?

It isn't. Organics is the rapidly increasing market to success
Would you consider use of GM if it provided economic benefits to farmers?

It doesn't; only benefits the mulit-national company eating massive part of the farmer's profits.

Would you consider use of GM if it provided environmental benefits?

I simply do not accept SPIN.

Would you consider the use of GM if it had specific Human nutritional or medical benefits?

Unless it was in totally controlled environment then it might be of value -- but that has NOTHING to do with FARMING. It is a medical matter for a laboratory only.

Would you consider the use of GM if it provided enhanced animal production?

Selective breeding by REAL FARMERS -- not company executives -- has always been the knowledgeable way to enhance animal production.

Would you consider the use of GM if it provided enhanced pasture or crop performance?

Let us not fall into the trap of considering Genetic Engineering is modification as occurs within nature as has always been the basis of success.

At what level would you accept the use of GM in New Zealand?

We are a big country with small population, highly successful in farming where not "run from an office in the city". We still have a "Clean Green' image overseas which we MUST retain -- and made to be true.

Would you be prepared to let your neighbour use GM if all regulatory requirements are met, or the GM animal or plant is approved for release in New Zealand?

What idiot would think whatever one farmer is growing doesn't migrate.

From a rural perspective, how do you think the use of GM will impact on New Zealand's image overseas?

Negatively -We have overseas visitor continuously and they regularly state that they are appalled at the obvious use of chemicals -- which totally contradicts their expectation of NZ's Clean Green claims.. and they tell their friends...
