Action Alert: Country of Origin Labelling Last chance to get Country of Origin Labelling of food in NZ
The Government will make a decision
this Monday, 7th November 2005, whether or not to adopt the Food
Standard Agency Australia New Zealand (FSANZ)'s new standard for the
mandatory Country
of Origin Labelling (CoOL) of food.
I am
horrified that the government is ignoring the overwhelming consumer support for
mandatory Country of Origin Labelling of food, as evidenced by the fact that
more than 96% of submissions in favour of the proposal for mandatory Country of
Origin Labelling of food came from New Zealand consumers.
This will be the first
time in the history of FSANZ that New Zealand has opposed a joint
food standard.
It has supported all the standards that are in the interests of industry. But
now when there is a standard that is clearly wanted by consumers the Government
is about to let us down
and deny our democratic
right to know where our food comes from. · that as a consumer you want to know where your food comes from.
· that you want to support local businesses and growers by buying local food but that you can’t if we don't have Country of Origin Labelling which clearly identifies which country our food comes from.
· that 96% of the submissions FSANZ received on CoOL were from New Zealand consumers saying they want Country of Origin labelling so they can make informed purchasing decisions.
· that you are outraged that the government policy is to put our trade liberalisation policy ahead of the rights of New Zealand consumers to know where their food comes from.
· that one of the key objectives of FSANZ is "the provision of adequate information relating to food to enable consumers to make informed choices." You want to know why our government is violating this key objective in favour of its international trade liberalisation policy.
