Maori trashed in Lions Rugby conflict

The Maori language was trashed when NZ Maori and the touring British and Irish Lions met in a brilliant game of Rugby Saturday night.  Skilful photography and great running commentary on TV3 as the game never lost interest but…

...the atrocious use of Maori when we are trying to regain our country’s unique language was a perpetual assault on the ears.  An (older) Maori elder, pre-game, spoke several times of the "Maoris" – and there is no plural use of “s” in the Maori language as he should well know and set a standard.

Then the commentators gave a really interesting and well-informed commentary, but in “Saaf Awkan dialect’, repeatedly referred to the “Marries“.   They are probably unaware of the struggle 25 years ago to recover our beautiful language and build self-esteem in those who carried Maori bloodlines creating – then – derogatory attitudes towards them.

Some recognised Maori leader should speak up – a matter perhaps for Television Complaints Authority.
