What you can do if you
receive Paedophile Spam.
An Orewa reader has asked a question that has been
bothering us too for a while. While what happens between consenting adults -- and
offered to you on Internet -- is up to the individual, when this involves children,
the matter is quite different.
If you receive Spam that appears (or purports) to
provide occurrences involving small children there are a number of places
where it can be sent.
You can forward it to a
government department which has jurisdiction on matters where the source is
within NZ but with contacts overseas..
You can just <FORWARD> without any
covering email to
censorship@dia.govt.nz and then
delete it from your computer -- remember to empty both the <Deleted
Items> and the entry in your <Sent> file to the
censor afterwards. Add this email address to your
<Addresses> list.
Jon Peacock, Inspector of Publications, Department
of Internal Affairs Censorship Compliance Unit told VillagePRESS,
" With regard to email spam there are a couple of
difficulties we face. First, it is very rare that the messages will have come
from a source within New Zealand, and therefore be under our jurisdiction.
"Where the material is clearly illegal content ie child
pornography, we can refer it to the jurisdiction from where it originated.
However we do not have the authority to enforce standard adult material from
outside New Zealand.
"If readers do receive material which refers to child
pornography they are more than welcome to send them to
censorship@dia.govt.nz.
"We are happy to receive anything dealing with
objectionable material so we
can refer it to the jurisdiction for action."
Another organisation, ECPAT, is worldwide and ECPAT NZ INC
is NZ part to it. There website is
www.ecpat.org.nz and a list of other organisations similarly involved at
www.ecpat.org.nz/links.htm
There phone number is 09 846 2629 Auckland'
