Healthy body, healthy mind: Goodbye to "eggs at the gate"?

IF YOU SUPPORT DIVERSIFICATION IN AGRICULTURE
(farms involved in many different activities and not single 'factory' type specialised production) you would be interested to read an article about latest NZ rules for egg production --
in The Bio Dynamic Ass magazine, Harvests,  [Vol 57, No 2 2004 -page 30] --

The latest problem for "sensible agriculture" is a new, compulsory code of practice that says EVERY produced must have a 'risk management programme' to manage 'biological, chemical and physical hazards... etc.. and have it 'verified by a MAF accredited agency'.  This may make sense in disgusting battery and 'factory' raising of poultry but for the small free-range and range-free producer this adds nothing but product costs; it pushes away from diversity to mono-culture, away from Nature and into factory production.

Check for further details at the Bio Dynamic Farming and Gardening Ass NZ website www.biodynamic.org.nz.  The Bio Dynamic Ass magazine, Harvests, suggests [Vol 57, No 2 2004 -page 30]  you write to the Minister of Agriculture (Jim Sutton, Parliament Buildings, Wellington) and tell him why you want small free range producers exempted from these rules.

If you are a producer yourself, or just a consumer, you could explain that you produce and/or consume such eggs and want the freedom to continue to do so. The Minister has said he'll consider an exemption but needs to hear from people who want it.

If you are a producer join the Free Range Egg Ass - contact Perry Spiller - perry@frea.org.nz - or ph 06-879-8847.
