"MARS SPECTACULAR" ~ "MARS SPECTACULAR" email similar to last year, may be overplayed In August 2008 a similar Internet message to one just received was downplayed by the Auckland Observatory; our news item then read... An internet spread story below is somewhat exaggerated according to a spokesman for the Auckland Observatory. Mars will be clearly visible and will stand out in the night sky. It will not be much different from how it was this time last year. While well worth keeping in mind to make sure you see it, most of the hype below is incorrect. The current information can be read at... http://docs.google.com/gview?a=v&pid=gmail&attid=0.1&thid=1229531de8608139&mt=application%2Fvnd.ms-powerpointThe 2008 circulating email read.... Red Planet is about to be spectacular! This month & next,
the Earth will be catching up with Mars in an encounter that will soon culminate
in the closest approach between the two planets in our recorded history. At the beginning of August it will rise in the east at 10pm & reach its azimuth at about 3am. By the end of August when the two planets are closest - Mars will rise at nightfall & reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30am.That's pretty convenient to see something that no human being has seen in recorded history. So - mark your
calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars grow progressively brighter &
brighter throughout the month. NO ONE ALIVE TODAY WILL EVER SEE THIS AGAIN...!!!
