EDITORIAL Jan 24, 2003
Over the last few weeks observing newspaper reports and receiving inaccurate
letters, I might be forgiven for appearing paranoid.
It seems to me that there is a move afoot to eliminate elected representatives
–Mayor and Councillors – to ensure the Dictatorial control of our monies by
straight bureaucracy. Then, no doubt, slackness would prevail and rates would go
through the roof.
What makes me think this?
Mayor and Councillors blamed for everything, and inaccurate stories
(gossip and in the paper) attempt to set Councillor against Councillor.
We need to remember that – when Ratepayers had no elected representation --
the Commissioner authorised the hideous Highrise in Orewa; he replaced
the Council CEO with five people drawing six times the then CEO salary (one now
drawing $1000, 4 others on $500 each, per working day!). All this done quietly,
not to be discovered until later. What other ‘secrets’ have yet to be
discovered?
The new Mayor and Councillors have a monstrous work load dealing
with problems over many past years – with old staff attitudes where unqualified
people hid lack of ability and knowledge.
On top of his frenetic load of meetings, Mayor John Law signs a heap of
letters prepared for him by staff he must be able to trust, with no time to read
and consider each one. Among these letters, several to the Krippner Road Assn
contained what we believe are irresponsible statements not in line with the
Mayors verbal statements.
Mayor John Law has said he will investigate.
A Krippner Rd Assn letter to the Mayor on Oct 30-02 stated
“Once again I must draw
your attention to what I can only see as deliberately misleading advice provided
to Councillors designed to get pecuniary advantages for businesses operating,
against the legitimate Rights and needs of residents.…”

The
reply
dated Dec12-02 states:
“The issues raised in your email have been investigated and I am pleased
to advise that there is no evidence of any attempt to mislead Councillors…”
VillagePress has yet to
find any Councillor with knowledge of this “investigation”.
Need I say more?
We need an investigation for real.
