Existential press - what does this mean??

Germaine Greer may have an answer for Louise Nicholas Editorial Aug 2007

Kia Ora,

When Louise Nicholas finally succeeded in her heroic efforts to uncover brutality by NZ policemen some years ago, she stated the obvious - she wanted to ensure a fair treatment of victims in rape trials. She still wants law changes; and she is the one most likely to achieve them.

As I recall, women’s rights activist, Germaine Greer, back in the late 70s, called for a basic change; I believe she said, “There should be no such thing as a crime of ‘Rape’ , but rather a crime of Violence”. As I understood it, and supported it then, as I still do, the background of a woman’s sexual experiences was not a matter for consideration.

It must be remembered that both accused and accuser are potentially ‘victims’ in such cases. The attacker including the one who doesn’t stop when told his actions are no longer acceptable (as in date rape) must be shown society’s strong disapproval. The woman who makes untrue accusations against a man in attempted retribution, or to achieve some other gains must also be shown society’s clear disapproval - she puts women who have actually been attacked at risk of being disbelieved.

It will be a pity if this is dealt with from a “PC” view where men’s rights are not mentioned and equally strenuously considered.

An important additional issue to the ‘policemen’ aspect of these cases was illustrated yesterday. at a petrol station where I was about to pay. The young woman receptionist suddenly shot off to deal with a car about to leave without paying. Her actions ’sorted it out’ rapidly. and I said to her, ”You should qualify for Police Training college.”

“No way,” she replied, “I don’t need a job where half of NZ hates you!”

It is great that prosecution was strenuously followed in relation to these disgusting policemen but there is a lot of positive education and public relations work to be done before we can all feel such confidence in the police, and the justice system as to regain a sense of personal security -- which is the real base for eventual world peace.
