What is
happening in Japan - how do they fit into the World
picture. Our Japanese VillagePress correspondent
there feels greatly at risk as he reports, first as part of an Editorial
:
He continues:
Thank you
for erasing X's name. He wants [a key job in aviation]. He would be paid by the
government. He thinks that to speak out is a bit risky... I hope it's not...
I saw the local news this evening. (In Japan, every
prefecture has TV broadcast stations.) They interviewed some local people but
nobody said, "This war is right". They can say "No war on Iraq"
but only a few people feel they can act. They are afraid of something...
Before the end of WW2, Japan had a secret police. If my
father had said, "Piss off [Emperor] Hirohito",
I wouldn't be born.
So people are trying to keep themselves safe.
When Japan had prime minister Hashimoto, a Japanese guest (High
school student who came to NZ to learn Rugby) and I were staying with you.
You asked him, "What do you think about Hashimoto?".
His answer was "Nothing". This is very very common.
Trying to keep silence has been passed on the message to each generation,
"Don't think."
I feel Internet became much slower yesterday. Something is
going on the net hacking? tracing? Surveillance?
When I asked
my correspondent, "Can I publish -- with no names -- your last email"
(above), he replied:
Sure. But please do remember that this is my opinion. (Of
course I believe that this is right).
Around 10 years ago, police (of some kind) came to my home
and asked my father "Your next door neighbour is a communist. Have you
observed any strange behaviour?"
We never heard of that.
My father said "Nothing"...
Dangerous... dangerous...
The generations here are watching war reports like a VIDEO GAME.
